*RANTS* |
| Ever since I heard of "Bloggers" I've been a little jealous -- in typical form, I'd already thought of this, but was at a quandary for implementation... Then these guys not only have it, they've packaged it and have a HUGE fan base... |
| 12/6/2003 | Well, Blogging has now become the latest, coolest thing. As with everything else, Mainstream is Old Hat. "Oh, how quaint! A Blog!"
I recently started my first job after college and I'm noticing a familiar trend: this job requires none of my powerful skills of insight and analysis -- just like my old job... What's up with this? Also, as before, I'm looking to my moonlight ventures to feed my creative urges. So! 50 hours at work and the rest of my time on making a PCcard to support Software Defined Radio... When do I join the Leisure Class? One last thing: Palm (both of them) are pissing me off! They're milling out their product at a break-neck pace and not supporting their user base. OS 5.2.1 has a different freature set depending on which handheld you're looking at and none of these improvements are being made available to existing devices. They suck. PocketPC and Linux now have the techical and spiritual advantage. |
| 2/13/03 | I'm in the middle of my LAST SEMESTER! Eventually, I'll post my senior thesis so that I can be satisfied that I've made my contribution to original content on the Internet.
I had a conversion with an OpenBSD fan recently. My head is still spinning. The thrust of OpenBSD is: Security Above All! As with any near fanatic proposal my head swims with counter point. Combine this with the fact that little is known about the dangers of computer insecurity and arguement ends up being a statement of personal preference. |
| 7/30/02 | I have, once again, been bit in the butt by the bastards at the bursars bureau. (Alliteraion is my forte'!) Having wait eagerly for my "priority enrollment" to begin, I log on only to find that I need to pay before I can sign up and BOTH the web site and the touch tone payment system is offline with no ETA. Apparently, somewhere in the small print is a request that I pay 7 days beforehand which I missed. SO! I'm once again stuck with the get-what-you-can enrollment. AARGH! The classes are hard enough without the Admin kicking me while I'm down. |
| 4/3/02 | I have a confession to make. I have a VisorPhone module for my Visor Deluxe and I'm disgusted with it: It crashes my PDA daily. If I weren't backing up often (see note below) this phone would be useless and completely unacceptable. The reasons I keep using it are varied: When it works, it's great. The address book can initiate a phone call and the caller ID is driven by address book entries, exactly as promised. Text entry for SMS is much better than phone pad entry. |
| 3/27/02 | I'm 32.5 today... not interesting, just curious.
Just when I've given up on Java this comes by. I guess it does have it purposes (albeit JavaScript). I'm astounded. |
| 3/21/02 | Ever since I found out that HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) is basically an add on to LaTex -- a Unix page format standard -- I felt that 'coding' HTML was akin to coding Microsoft Word Documents. Then I see something like this. I'm fascinated that they take such pride in it. |
| 2/7/02 | I've once again run up against the Microsoft Machine -- They have become incredibly strict about licensing. My desktop and my notebook. Nothing crazy. So, once again, I'm off to wade in the Linux Pool. Unfortunatley, the results are mixed... You can check on my progress here. Ideally, I'll be editing and posting that file from Linux -- until then, who knows? Do I have to get Office XP? Jerks... |
| 1/10/02 | As promised, I'm updating this on a very casual basis.
Finally got my local web page (for what it's worth) up. I went to MacWorld last week and admired the new iMac -- beautiful. However they did a bit of a switch-o/change-o. These Macs were dolled up to an outrageous degree to create a glow and response not likely available at the end-user's home or office: 1) The Mac was on a lighted table which definitely gave it an ghostly, other-worldly appearance above and beyond it's amazing styling. 2) The Mac all had internet access which was FAST. Technically, I wouldn't doubt that they were all on a 100bT connection to a Cisco 12000 being fed by a DS-3. The illusion is that fast web=fast general application. This is obviously not the case. 3) They had headphones and you could play mp3s off iTunes or over the internet and they sounded GREAT! I come to find out that the headphones are these crazy 'noise cancellation' Bose devices that retail for $300! So! Wowed I was... just as they planned. And to all you Linux and Windows drones which toe the "It's what it does, not how it looks" mantra, all I have to say to you is "PORSCHE". Or better yet, "PT CRUISER". |
| 11/28/01 | I'm experiencing that 'life flashing before your eyes'
moment near the end of the semester where I'm wondering if I haven't made
a terrible mistake... This school thing is challenging.
XP is out now and I haven't upgraded yet. I say 'yet' because I fully expect to do so soon. As much as I hate it, I have noticed that Linux (regardless of the Evangelists) is also quite troublesome (no goddam help). Linux IS a sexy OS and I plan to experiment with it more in the future. WHEN is the issue. School and life have a tendency to fill the temporal container of my days. P.S. I've recently been trying to legalize a 'beater' pickup I bought to carry loads from Home Depot and to the Dump -- more on this in the HOMOwner part -- only to be reminded that nothing is cheap, only shades of expensive. |
| 7/27/01 | Purely as a tool to measure my system's performance, I loaded a copy of Quake 3 Arena. The problem is that this only inspires me to poke and tweak my PC thinking that I keep getting fragged because of a system setting -- not that I have no gaming talent... Come to think of it: I never have had any gaming skill! It's strange to be an oddball in a clique of oddballs. |
| 6/2/01 | I just read how aggressively Microsoft is pushing Office XP and feel the concern noted below heightened all the more: The Internet for Dummies...The "Do all my work" Wizard...I don't have a computer, I have a Microsoft terminal... |
| 6/1/01 | I'm continually trying new web hosts (I certainly am not going to host this off my own computer). Geocities has that damn pop up window, and Earthlink (my ISP) doesn't support Micorsoft Server Extensions... Actually, I'll probably move this to Earthlink because the Microsoft "Publish" feature actually scares me a bit -- I've noticed that Microsoft lately has made their version of the Internet quite simple to put together -- Front Page for development, Server Extensions on a Win200 server, and IExplorer to view and you can do some pretty amazing things. If I were to try to reproduce the same effect, I'd need to script in Java and use SQL and wrap it all up with FTP to post it... neither Java or SQL are trivial to use... I'm lazy and I'm only making the problem worse... |
| 5/26/01 | Just finished another Punishing Semester -- Too draned to bitch... |
